I Don’t Remember

Released 4th July, 1983

I Don’t Remember was originally released on Peter’s third solo album – though iterations of the song had been performed live a couple of years before that – but this live single version was actually released in support of the Plays Live album, in 1983. That said, it’s not exactly the same as the version on the Plays Live album, as this single mix is slightly sped-up, has less crowd noise and an extended instrumental outro.

The song was written by Peter Gabriel and co-produced with Peter Walsh at Shabbey Road Studios, Bath, which was the affectionate name the pair gave to Gabriel’s home studio at Ashcombe House. See more.

The single first charted in the UK on 9 July 1983, peaked at 62 and stayed in the UK Top75 for 4 weeks.

The accompanying video, using this live single mix was directed by Marcello Anciano and produced by Eric Fellner.

I Don’t Remember features drums, percussion and backing vocals by Jerry Marotta, stick, bass and backing vocals by Tony Levin, guitar and backing vocals by David Rhodes, synthesiser and piano by Larry Fast (Synergy) and synthesiser, piano and vocals by Peter Gabriel.
