It’s ten years since the formation of Bowers & Wilkins Society of Sound – a monthly place to listen to, discover and discuss music and sound – and in that time over 120 releases have reached the ears of interested listeners and new audiences. It is therefore with some sadness, but an immense sense of pride, that we reluctantly announce the end of Society of Sound in March 2019.
The deal to start Society of Sound was sealed in a Bristolian hifi store, as Peter Gabriel’s ‘Passion’ album played through a pair of high-end Bowers & Wilkins speakers. Highly appropriate surroundings for an agreement between Real World and the acclaimed British hifi pioneers: two organisations driven by a passion for great music, delivered in pristine audio quality.
Releasing an album of new, often specially commissioned, music each month, for a decade, has been no mean feat, but it’s also been a hugely rewarding experience to provide a platform for artists and musicians to create and share their music in high resolution audio. It has also provided the opportunity for many artists to make records that would not otherwise have been recorded, oftentime in the state of the art surroundings of Real World Studios.
Peter Gabriel and Real World are very pleased to have worked with Bowers & Wilkins on Society of Sound, a company not only truly passionate about delivering unrivalled sound quality, but one that has clearly believed that it is just as important to be interested in what their customers hear, as how they hear it. This approach, mostly unheralded beyond those within the Society of Sound membership, has been a unique way to support music and musicians and Society of Sound leaves a significant legacy with its passing, and many wonderful albums that simply would not exist without the company’s patronage.
