Nûdem Durak’s story is extraordinary and one for all musicians to think about because she did what all of us do, which is to sing her songs, in her language, to her people and for that she had a 19 year jail sentence. Roger Waters generously decided to start a campaign, giving her a guitar, signed and supported by a lot of musicians. That’s a wonderful thing and I am very glad to be a part of it.
I was first made aware of Nûdem’s situation by my daughter who was working for a freedom of expression project called The Voice Project and we sent some messages at that time for her. I’m very sad that Nûdem is still stuck in jail, she should be out.
I hope the Turkish government will reconsider her case with compassion.
