For years, i've privately thanked the pop culture gods that PG songs have (to my knowledge) been spared the pop-musak dumb-down treatment on American Idol or Glee. Because history teaches that, with a few exceptions (Byrne, Elbow) no one can adequately pull off covering PG, and his great or at least interesting songs can be made to sound ordinary and flat. And that is simply unacceptable.
but then tonight with the telly on in the background, i heard a disturbing thin acapella base harmony and a shuffling carribean shaker, and then sparkly-jangly guitars, and then i look to the tv and the guy from Glee is in a beige trenchcoat holding up a boombox... And yes, the guy gave a good effort, but really. PG is for adults. Or at least for people who like adult music. This version... it was musical pablum.
please hurry back PG.
