I'm trying to find a local S.F Bay Area charity where I can donate clean blankets, clothing, & large food packages to Japan. I haven't trusted Red Cross since they only helped the rich people in Louisiana after Katrina. I'm better able to donate a large amount of material goods rather than a large amount of money, otherwise I'd donate to Doctors without Borders. I also would rather send something directly to northern Japan. Any info on any reputable charity is appreciated. Thanks.

I think we can trust Peter's judgment - Peter twittered this itspetergabriel We need to support Save the Children - they just launched an direct appeal for affected children&families in Japan http://bit.ly/f8WWfA 13 Mar http://www.savethechildren.org.uk/en/japan-earthquake-and-tsunami-appeal.htm?sourcecode=A11038054 Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Thanks to your incredible generosity, we have now reached our fundraising target for the Japan appeal. The funds raised are helping children recover from the devastating earthquake and tsunami. Thank you. The scale of the disaster was almost unimaginable. Over 10,872 people died and 16,244 are still missing. More than 387,000 people were forced from their homes by the disaster, including around 74,000 children. They are now living in evacuation centres, and could be living in them for months. As we've been operating in Japan for 25 years we were able to respond immediately following the devastating earthquake and tsunami, working alongside the government, and we're committed to helping children in Japan for the long-term. Places to play We've opened 12 child-friendly spaces in hard-hit Iwate and Miyagi prefectures where children can spend time and play with other children while being supervised by responsible adults. Activities will start in 3 more sapces in the coming days. The play areas also give parents much-needed time to rebuild their lives. We're a leading expert in this field, operating child-friendly spaces in recent disaster zones in Haiti, Italy and Pakistan. "I'm happy we have this because this means we can meet other children," said Mai Miura, 12, who had just attended her first session at a child-friendly space in Ishinomaki. "I haven't seen my friends for a long time, and we have been very bored in the evacuation centre." Read our blog on child-friendly spaces in Japan. While we're no longer accepting donations earmarked for our emergencies work in Japan, we are responding to emergencies around the world, including in Libya. Our Children's Emergency Fund helps us respond quickly when disaster strikes, and has been vital to us setting up our emergency response in Cote d'Ivoire, where children and their families are getting caught up in the escalating violence. Thank you.

http://www.globalgiving.org/projects/japan-earthquake-tsunami-relief/ Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund Summary The north coast of Japan was hit by a horrible tsunami after a 9.0 magnitude earthquake that occurred 80 miles offshore. This fund is supporting organizations providing relief and aid to victims. What is the issue, problem, or challenge? Tsunami waves caused major destruction in northern Japan. The death toll has now officially crossed 10,000 & more than 17,000 are missing Nearly 300,000 are in temporary shelter. We are working primarily with local Japanese organizations on the ground to provide support. These are listed on the "Reports" tab of this Fund. We will post more details of the specific use of funds as we receive them. How will this project solve this problem? This project will disburse funds to organizations providing relief and emergency services to victims of the earthquake and tsunami. Potential Long Term Impact Major disasters always require a huge amount of international support to provide relief and long term recovery efforts. In the case of Japan, these initial funds will help survivors and victims get necessary services. Project Message "This tremor was unlike any I've experienced previously, and I've lived here for eight years. It was a sustained rolling that made it impossible to stand, almost like vertigo." - Matt Alt, quoted in New York Times, an American writer and translator living in Japan Funding Information Total Funding Received to Date: $2,885,782 Remaining Goal to be Funded: $1,114,217 Total Funding Goal: $4,000,000 http://www.unicef.ca/portal/SmartDefault.aspx?at=2700 Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami A mother and child crouch on a street in Tokyo, Japan while an earthquake hits Friday, March 11. AP Photo/Kyodo News A mother and child crouch on a street in Tokyo while an earthquake hits Friday, March 11, 2011 A 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Japan early morning on March 11, 2011. It was one of the largest earthquakes in recorded history – causing massive destruction, a deadly tsunami across the Pacific Rim, and threats of nuclear radiation. Our UNICEF team extends our deepest sympathies to the Japanese families who suffered incredible losses. UNICEF is on standby with vital emergency supplies and expert staff to assist the Government of Japan. During times of crisis, we provide life-saving supplies (like clean water, food and medical kits), as well as critical services (like emergency management, education and child protection). While we are not accepting donations specifically for Japanese earthquake relief at this time, you can support our general emergency relief fund by making a donation online, calling 1-800-567-4483 or texting the word GIVE to 45678* on your mobile device. The general emergency fund enables UNICEF to deploy emergency supplies and teams immediately following a disaster.

Thanks for those, Ezri. Watch those double posts! I'll see if any of those are accepting actual material goods. Most of them seem to want only monetary donations.

If they won't accept the durable goods, give them to the local homeless shelter, they are always in need.

There was a large hurricane in Florida in the early 90's can't remember Hugo or Andrew. Anyway we actually sent baby formula, diapers and bottled water but I forget which charity facilitated it.

Fukushima Flush: Radiation 10,000 times normal confirmed http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHJTwAU-M8I Uploaded by RussiaToday on Apr 1, 2011 Japanese officials are planning to pump out contaminated water from the quake-hit reactors at the Fukushima nuclear plant. Authorities hope the measure will help efforts to restore the facility's cooling systems. It comes after radiation was detected in groundwater near the plant for the first time - the levels were ten thousand times higher than the legal limit. Authorities say they don't plan to expand the 20-kilometer evacuation zone, despite the fact radiation was registered 40 kilometers from the facility. For more on the story let's talk to American writer and Japanologist Alex Kerr.

I feel so sorry for the brave workers who have been putting their lives at risk to try to stop this from becoming an even bigger catastrophe. I'm sure many of them will die much younger than they would have if this hadn't happened.
