Oh DeeJie, I am so happy that you love it as much as I!!!! I've only watched it like 10 times now! I had a friend over last night and we were surfing Sarah at You Tube and there it was! I was like, what is this? Why is this not on a cd? They certainly spent a lot of money making that homage to Leonard Peltier, did you catch that? I was surprised that in two years on you tube, the video has been viewed by so few people! I think it is the most unusual and brilliant rendition of this classic song! And Sarah is so beautiful isn't she? Have you heard her two new songs? I've been a huge Sarah fan since 1989 and have seen her live 8 times. She recently announced that her marriage has ended which really made me sad.
Well, thanks much!!! Have a great day!

I'm sad to say that I've never actually seen Sarah perform live, but I have been a long-time fan as well.
I've watched to video several times now Lore, and I must confess to a little bit of apathy - I actually had to Google Leonard Peltier. What a sad, frustrating story, but I cannot say that I am surprised. Not at all. While things are marginally better here for our indigenous peoples, they have certainly faced their share of struggles. I've read a few articles, and my husband is currently trying to download the film 'Incident at Oglala'. I'm curious now!
Anyhow, the song - a haunting rendition, in the typical ethereal Sarah-Maclachlan that I love to listen to. She has this voice that simply cannot be copied. I still remember the very first time I heard her sing - I heard it on the radio. She was singing 'The Lady of Shalott', and was absolutely mezmerized. I will never forget hearing that as long as I live. I think I may have been 14 or 15 at the time.
I still have to go back and watch the video again (unchained melody) because there are many aspects of the symbolism that I just don't get! So at this point, it's a bit of a riddle that I feel challenged by. But yes, it was beautiful and she is indeed lovely.
I was just reading last week, or the week prior about the dissolution of her marriage and felt sadness. these things are always so sad when children are involved.
Well.thanks so much again Lore - I truly enjoyed coming across that little gem, much thanks to you!!!!

You know, i watched this video a couple of times. Sarah does give a beautiful rendition. The images are also beautiful and haunting. And the story of Leonard Peltier is tragic and hopefully Obama will have the courage to pardon the guy once he gets into office. But really, the beautiful imagery, with it's christ references and bugs in a jar has little to do with either the song or Peltier, so it all seems just a bit pretentious to me. Sorry.

Oh Nechesh, no need to be sorry in the least! Am happy that you took that time.
Yes, the imagery is a bit strange and yes, I can certainly see the pretentious you see in the video. I make know claims to understanding it all, what she was trying to bring across but I gather it was sincere in it's pretentiousness.
Perhaps the Christ imagery is exactly what Leonard has become? Not a 'Christ' but certainly there has been a sacrifice of his life, even if it was not by his own design, like Christ's live supposedly was. What moves me most is the rendition of the song, i close my yes to hear it, to feel it and my visions are not so like hers.
I found it! The cd. Can't wait to get it.
"Pine Ridge: An Open Letter To Allan Rock/Songs For Leonard Peltier"
And to dear S. Deejie,
You're sweet! Truly I mean that in sincerity!
If you haven't heard of this already, check out the great book/film- In the Spirit of Crazy Horse by Peter Matthiessen. ( the film narrated by Robert Redford)
And yes, i do have high hopes that Barack will indeed pardon Leonard. I have heard it said. There was an intense campaign to get Clinton to before he was out to no avail. Barack is different though so high hopes live!
But Deejie, what is this song- The Lady Of Shalott, as I don't recognize this? I would love to hear this, agian something I have never heard, such as this Unchained Melody.
And one day, you will see her, I know it. I need to check the geography thread, where do you live?
Well, it is late and I am tired. My in-laws are sleeping in my bed so i must get my couch-bed together. Off to sleep then!
Thanks again D and also N. Glad someone watched and took the time.
lots of love and sweet dreams!

I'm with Lore - no need to apologize for one's opinion. Aren't all artists a teeny tiny wee bit pretentious in some aspect?
Lore, Lady of Shalott is a beautiful, epic poem by Tennyson. I cannot seem to find a Sarah Mclachlan version of it anywhere, but Loreena Mckennit does an equally lovely rendition
I found this little beauty too - Sarah M and Paula Cole!!!!! Paula Cole is another personal favourite of mine so these two paired is splendid!!!!

Good morning D! I will look for the song- Lady of Shalott. Loreena is another amazing artist. She records at Real World! At least a couple of her cd's.
And oh yes! Paula! Do you have her 'Courage'? It is my favorite so far! I wish she would find the backing for a tour! I've seen her with Sarah warming up, at the Lilith Fair and once solo. And of course her amazing tour with Peter! When I saw that tour, SO, I saw Joy Askew as Pete's back-up. I would have loved to seen the Paula back-up tour. Oh well, it lives forever on dvd, can't go wrong with that!
Let's see, there was something else.
OH! I know, I got the cd in the mail yesterday! Pine Ridge- an open letter to Allen Rock.
This cd has only Canadian artists on it, and turns out Leonard was extradited from CAnada to the U.S. after many months of battle and sadly, they never should have extradited Leonard because all much of the evidence was forged.
FREE LEONARD PELTIER!!!!
NOW!!!!!!!!!
p.s. it is so nice to listen to Sarah and Unchained Melody on my speakers LOUD!!!!!
LUV!!!!
Have a great day Deejie!!!
and whomever else may happen to read this.

Have to disagree. Can't understand an artist as talented as Sarah wasting time recording this hideous dirge. Check out her own material particularly Fumbling Towards Ecstasy - far superior.

No emotion involved - just like to hear new songs rather than oldies that have been done to death by countless karaoke singers. By the way Lore, have you ever heard of irony?
