Campbell River Set For Explosion
CAMPBELL RIVER - It?s one of the defining moments in Vancouver Island?s history, and Saturday in Campbell River, it?s going to be celebrated with a bang. Fifty years ago, the Ripple Rock explosion just north of the city tamed the once deadly Seymour Narrows, allowing ships to pass through the area safely. It was the largest man-made non-nuclear explosion ever pulled off, and the City of Campbell River is recreating it Saturday morning, with some Hollywood-style help.
The men shoveling dirt on a barge Friday in Menzies Bay call this part of their job glorified ditch digging. It doesn?t look like much, but what they?re creating should at 9:31am Saturday morning, look something like the legendary blast 50 years ago beneath Seymour Narrows.
The Ripple Rock blast of April 5, 1958 was a one-of-a-kind, a years-in-the-making feat of engineering, destroying an underwater mountain after more than a hundred lives were lost in the treacherous area. The team from Vancouver?s Second Reality Effects believes it can accurately re-create it visually.
