Me, I'm just a lawnmower, you can tell me by the way I walk. That's what I hear in my head when someone mentions PG, but then I hear him crying out, "I grieve....for you."

I can't believe there aren't more "In Your Eyes" responses here. Maybe it's just being from Minnesota but that and Solsbury Hill are the only songs that'll actually trigger folks here. Also, 7/8 isn't really an odd time signature, is it.?

I can't disagree with many of the submissions above, but for me - perhaps not a signature song - but a very very important turning point song for him is Games Without Frontiers. It's the SOUND of it more than anything. Considering it's from 1980 it still seems to have been beamed down from a distant planet. It really lodged in my head when 3 came out and I was delighted that the whole album had that stripped back, no cymbals, odd noises kind of feel.
because it was the SINGLE, it stuck in our consciousness in 1980 in the same way as say, Once In A Lifetime, by Talking Heads - just kinda "out there". Most people I know, of a certain age, who are not into Gabriel, can sing a bit of this song.
it is so easy to forget in the mists of time. Totally ahead of it's time, and so timeless even now - in it's studio incarnation at least.
I admit it's not a favourite SONG of his, I don't look for it on set lists, but for what it's represents about PG, it's up there.

useless bit of trivia, but when I saw PG in Vancouver '83 I had that Charles/Diana coin in my purse, carried it around for good luck - no idea where it is now.

Easy, "Shock" head to head with "Sledge".
