Forums » Album » NEW BLOOD - Signal to Noise... noise?

Roy Batty 13 October 2011 at 5:42am Posts: 20 (0 today) Status: offline
So I have just got the exclusive "Signal to Noise" track from iTunes version of the Special Edition of NEW BLOOD, and right at the end, when the music has already faded and the track is about to stop, there's some kind of popping, cracking, electric noise. Has anybody else noticed this? I hope Gabriel's people take note of this and fix it.

I suspect it is supposed to be there, i.e. "noise".

Errrr... no. It's not something deliberate, believe me. It's some kind of encoding flaw, but there's no way to know if it's only on the AAC file or it's source related.

I have listened to mine numerous times and I can't hear any popping, cracking electric noise. FYI, my "Signal To Noise" track time is shown as 7:47. I bought my 28-track New Blood Special Edition on iTunes (US) on Monday night (Oct. 10) sometime between 10:30 PM and midnight (Mountain Time in the US). Roy Batty: What's the update on your situation concerning this issue?

I am sorry to have sounded this false alarm. I have listened closer –and LOUDER– to the track's end, and that sound seems to be some wood cracking or something similar from the orchestra; you know, the kind of sound you hear at a concert hall when some player moves on his/her chair or reposition an instrument. Once again, sorry for having opened a new thread without making sure first; that's the kind of thing that I find very annoying when done by others, so I feel conveniently embarrassed and humbled now.

ROY and dagobah what is your opinion of this version? i

As I have stated somewhere else on this board, I was not really impressed by the NEW BLOOD part of the latest Peter's tour. The new orchestral arrangements seem like unnecessary tinkering to me, and, sadly, while a few versions are enjoyable enough, most are very bland and don't really bring anything new or interesting to the mix (the "Solsbury Hill" version being specially grating, although I must confess that, IMHO, Gabriel's approach to that song live on stage has been terrible more often than not, turning one of his best and most memorable songs from a moving, epic anthem into a silly, poppy song). In the particular case of "Signal to Noise", the new arrangement is not all that far from the old one, which I liked pretty much, so yeah, it's ok, but again, unnecessary and nothing new. I'd rather have Peter direct his musical efforts towards new stuff and forget about all this revisiting and revisionism.

I agree with Roy Batty (above) to a certain extent . . . . . about the arrangement of the New Blood version of "Signal To Noise" . . . . that it's "not all that far from the old one". However, one thing that is obvious to me is . . . . that Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's vocal part in the New Blood version doesn't seem represented as it is on the version from the album "Up". I'd have to listen to both versions more times with more attention in order to compare them. Bottom line is . . . . . I like both versions.

I find the Signal To Noise NB version quite good but the version of Father Son is very disappointing in my opinion comparing with the original on OvO.

Hello to all, where can I find this version of signal to noise? I bought the cd special edition version of new blood, but there is no "signal to noise". In the download booklet in the womad shop it is the last track on the 2nd cd, but either on the cd nor on the bonus downloadpack I can find this track.
