Is it just me or does it all go horribly out of tune at 2:43 - 2:45 of Rhythm of the Heat?

Er, it's just you. Mine sounds fine.
(Although those girly backing vocals aren't my favourite - a bit thin and reedy for that section)

I absolutely agree that the female vocals are thin and reedy (nicely put btw), but the out-of-tuneness seems to come from the brass/woodwind imho.

Yeah, it's out of tune, I'm surprised that I didn't notice it myself... But I guess now that I know it I'll hear it every single time. Thank you very much

I think maybe there are different versions. It sounds out of tune on the downloaded version and the instrumental CD version, but ok on the full version from the vocal CD.

i´ve heard it instrumental, i think the out of tune it is deliberate to create a chaos...but as you say it is out of tune...

From the top of my authoritative and wide musical ignorance, I would say it's a dissonance...

(of which I've fully read the first paragraph for now...)

Changed my mind. I think it's the cellos that are out of tune. I don't think John Metcalfe would write anything to sound deliberately out of tune or dissonant.

I believe it's like that since day one, and on purpose. It's maybe now more accentuated, and of course it's obvious in the instrumental version.
It's IMHO a perfect rendition of the state of confusion in which one would be at this state in the song (Jung in Africa)...

Yes, very much on purpose to my ear. I like it. A little moment of chaos. It was the same when played on Later so obviously not a 'mistake'.

This song is about losing control. This feels like a perfect hint of the loss of control to come.
