Every year for the Holidays I always cook the dinner and with the extra left-overs, I make a few plates and give them to folks that otherwise would not get to enjoy this traditional meal. This year I wanted to do something bigger and make two full dinners in order to share with my fellow local Veterans.
Today I came up with an idea. Even though it is very close to the American Thanksgiving. I named this idea/project "Operation H.U.G. (Helping Us Give). The idea is for others to reach out to the Veterans in their local area and give a Holiday "Hug". They could do this by hosting a vet and his/her family for dinner, or bringing dinner plates to a local VA hospital, Nursing Home, Shelter. It does not have to be a meal. They can donate things like clothes, blankets, food, toys, etc. Whatever they want. Just the act of helping Veterans in need...a hug if you will.
I normally pay for everything for the Holiday meal and planned on doing the same. But a friend suggested I post my plan on my Facebook page and see who might wish to donate using paypal as one option. Be it money, food, and any other items since I will be feeding at least ten extra people. So I did and have been amazed at the results. So far a handful of souls have stepped up and made donations, which has so amazed and touched me. This has been such a tough year for all world wide and I did not expect anyone, let alone this many to support and reach out. A really amazing moment was seeing that two people from OUTSIDE the USA made donations! WOW! This is truely a wonderful experience.
If you would like to give a Holiday H.U.G., you can contact me via Facebook or go to my paypal page. My paypal id is: TheSoldierGirl@gmail.com
I will be posting a new thread of my FB page for Operation H.U.G. tonight or tomorrow morning. This Holiday season has just become a wee better for a few Veterans due to the caring support of those who realize the sacrifice they have made.
