i wrote this in 1991 before the phenomenon of shows like 'american idol' and after having read that musical artists would hang around pg before being recognized. in it i play on the image of St. Peter who sits at the pearly gates & the angel Gabriel who heralds a new coming. Gabriel Sits at his front door And his front door. Waiting Waiting for another soul To find on it's map the route Pencilled in in blood To his front door. Gabriel The people come But these are not people. They are frenzy Proud and pencilled gold. Proud 'cause they can tap a dance. Proud to make others cry With words as soothing As a scouring pad. Gabriel Your house echoes Of lost lights Whose filaments are nearing their ends. And of night lights All baby bright With a youthful glow. These have forgotten Forgotten the maps That sit That sit in the unlit glovecompartments In the cars Glowing in neon blood Of the route to your front door. But those aren't needed Anymore. They want to stay. To live in sunshine That is never switched off. Gabriel They sit. They sit in shy dead bullskins In their glory And these give up their lives For the comfort of tired performing butts. They say The neon light Shines bright on Broadway. Shine Shine bright light. i just came across this interview from 5 years ago in which pg talks about becoming a dad again & how he's mellowed over the years. 'he seems almost relieved to have left behind his life as a tortured creative artist.' reads the article. it goes on to quote pg: "occasionally you see these bruised, narcissistic egos that fill up a lot of the entertainment business and you think how sad not to be able to think beyond yourself.' this is what my poem 'gabriel's front door' is based on. i'm not in the entertainment business but it's obvious from this end that the limelight attracts, envelopes & magnifies these 'narcissistic egos'. 'gabriel' is the protagonist in my poem but this doesn't mean to say that i place pg in the same category as those who aren't 'able to think beyond' themselves. 'gabriel', in this case, is the threshold to the entertainment business. hopefully he has never been treated like a doormat! http://michellecfecit.wordpress.com/
