There is also a very educated theory that vision is nothing more than a controlled hallucination. We can't actually see everything that's going on around us. If we did, we'd go mental. So our brains lock on only to certain items that fit recognizeable patterns and just register that.
Can't find a link at present, but one of the proponets of this idea was Dr. Susan Blackmore. I did find this article on consciousness as an illusion:
