I was discussing this issue with someone at 4AD and they said all the early CDs from the 80s and early 90s, though quieter than today's CDs, were mastered according to Redbook compact disc standards. These new CDs we see these days with clipped peaks are, in fact, mutant CDs, going against the very Redbook standards the industry was supposed to abide by. So (some pun intended), save your 80s Virgin and Geffen CDs of So, they may well be the "best" mastered versions in the market!

I do agree that the new So remasters are too "hot" for my ears. One of the great things about Peter's music is his use of dynamics, and they just get lost with such a heavily compressed mix. The last master still sounds pretty good to me, so I'll continue listening to that.
