I just discovered that there were three versions of In Your Eyes when it was released in 1986. This is not news to most of you folks, but it's new info for me. The lengths of the three versions are:
5:29
7:14
8:55
Obviously, the 5:29 version is from the So album. I listened to the 7:14 version on YouTube. But I can't find the 8:55 version on YouTube. Questions:
1. Is the 8:55 version much different from the 7:14 version?
2. Since I can't find it on YouTube, where on the Internet would I be able to listen to the 8:55 version?

Hello Dagobah I can see reference to it on Wikipedia - supposedly 12" special mix but like you can't find it.
Heard this 12" remix but only 7.19. I've posted it because I do really like it. Someone else might too.

Argh, I think that vocal in the intro made every hair on my body stand on end!!
I do have an Mp3 of a long/extended version of IYE, but it might be this one. Will check and let you know.

After a few listens, I'm not too fond of the 7:14 version. By the way, is it 7:14 or 7:19? Wikipedia says 7:14, but it could be wrong because it's Wikipedia. I'll just refer to it as the 7:14 version until someone clears this up.
I was hoping the 7:14 version would include MORE of the familiar synth melody that is in the album version, but it doesn't. I'm referring to the synth melody that's played from the beginning of the song to about 1:04. It repeats again from about 2:18 to 3:10.
Of all the beautiful sounds that Peter has ever created, that synth melody is one of my favorites. I'll keep checking back to this thread to see if any of you folks have more feedback on this topic. I know it's kind of a slow time with Peter Gabriel right now so I realize not everybody is on the forum.

Maybe someone can give more detailed informations about "In Your Eyes". It is a single I do not have in my collection.
Not sure about, but i think other versions with different (longer) running time could also be included on the "In Your Eyes"-single.

I have a version that's over 10 minutes long - the "dormlights" mix.
I'm wondering if this is official or a fan mix. Anybody know?

Dormlights mix: fan mix by a guy I know. It's quite good.
I have those In Your Eyeses :-]
In Your Eyes radio edit (04:50)
In Your Eyes single mix (06:19)
In Your Eyes special mix (07:15)
In Your Eyes Say Anything remix (08:37)
Hmmm. . . different durations from those mentioned by Dagobah - interesting.
Maybe different versions?

Caste Goes To London:
It appears the 7:14 version mentioned on Wikipedia is the same as the 7:15 version you mention in your reply. They are both referred to as the special mix.
As I said before, I'm not too fond of the "special mix".
But now that you have mentioned a 8:37 version, which you refer to as the "Say Anything" remix, I looked up some info about the soundtrack to the movie "Say Anything". Both Wikipedia and allmusic.com show a version of "In Your Eyes" as 5:23 Now I'm confused!
Here's my question for Caste Goes To London:
Is your 8:37 version pretty similar to your 7:15 version?

No, it's 1:22 longer. :-]
Ahem: the 8:37 IYE (8:45 on the actual CD that I have, must check if it's the same version) is live, presumably taken from POV since PG thanks the crowd in Greek (I think) at the end.
The 7:15 version is in studio (B side of the 12" single I think).
But I found another CD in my collection which has a version of IYE lasting 4:53 minutes - must be the radio edit I mentioned before (4:50).
god it's confusing. :-]

In your eyes (Album version) 5.30
In your eyes (US Remix) also known as (Radio Edit) 5.00
In your eyes (Special Mix) 7.24
In your eyes (Live in Athens) 8.46 from 'Say Anything' also issued with 'The Daily Mail'
That's how I see it.

Here's what I have (short-to-long):
5:14 So, album "Rough" Mix
5:30 So, album (cd)
6:22 Single Mix
6:59 Charlie Bucket Electro Remix
7:11 Special Mix (cd)
7:14 Special Mix (12" vinyl, "Big Time Dance Mix" B-Side)
7:21 Special Mix, "Rough Mix"
9:35 "Before Us Edit" (Live, amazing quality)
10:52 Dormlights Mix
I have two live Athens versions, both clock in at over 12 min. The only version I have at about 8:46 is the New Blood version from LA.

Now, THAT'S a lot of versions! Thanks again for the additional feedback. What started my interest in this topic was the 1989 movie Say Anything. I had seen the video cover box in video rental stores for years. I finally got around to reading the movie reviews by Roger Ebert and at allmovie.com I then watched the movie. I loved it. Yeah, it's a little dated and it has a few stupid scenes. But it had an original story, realistic dialogue, and a great ending. Not many movies have all of those things. And portions of Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" are played TWICE in the movie so that was special for a Peter Gabriel fan like me.
I wish the iTunes Store (US) or Amazon.com MP3 would offer some of the versions in the post above. That's where I buy my music from unless I buy the physical CD.

Hey there, all. For anyone interested, I'm the creator of the "Dormlights Mix". It was created using the remastered "So" release, the end credits sequence of the "Play: The Videos" DVD (in addition to a few seconds of the 5.1 remix of the song itself so it wouldn't fade out), and the "Special Mix" vinyl version. Just to put this to bed, the "official" versions of "In Your Eyes" are as follows:
4:54 Radio Edit (edit of the "Single Mix")
5:27 Album
6:15 Single Mix (vinyl single)
7:14 Special Mix (vinyl single)
That is IT for the studio versions. The full-length Athens PoV live version is over 12 minutes long (it plays in its entirety on the PoV VHS and Laserdisc releases). The 8:37 and 8:45 "live" and "Say Anything" mixes are all derived from this version. There is a fan-made "Extended Special Mix" which is likely the 8:55 version that Wikipedia was alluding to, but it's rather badly cobbled together in my humble opinion. It's actually what prompted me to create the "Dormlights Mix" to begin with. My version runs 10:51.

I just happened upon this as well. I created the "Extended Special Mix." I wouldn't say it was badly cobbled together, as much as it was limited by the available materials and a real world constraint. I was trying to create a version of "In Your Eyes" with the lyrics at the beginning for use at my wedding reception. The Special Mix is missing the normal verses, so I took the beginning and ending of the special mix and added it to the album version. There was really no good segue point from the opening lyrics to the album version, so the cut is rather abrupt. I played with many versions but could never get it quite right.
The breakthrough for Dan's Dormlights Mix was when "Play" was released on DVD. Using multichannel outputs from a DVD player, one could get isolated 5.1 tracks. I believe Dan sampled these, and used this to create a long segue period (I would say overly long) which glosses over the awkward cut I was dealing with.

D'oh! I meant no offense with the "cobbled together" thing. I just meant that I found it funny that Wikipedia would have listed it as an official version as it was pretty obvious as a fan-made one. But then, so is mine.
