What happened to the music PG and Brian Eno wrote for the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup 2006?
Cimber 6 February 2011 at 7:53pm Posts: 2571 (0 today) Status: offline
fifa world cup 2006 it was dissapointing = Peter Gabriel, Brian Eno, but also German artist Andre Heller ("Africa, Africa") were working on a show for the opening ceremony of "FIFA WORLD CUP 2006" in Berlin. The team worked together for over half a year to discuss, create and develope musical and visual ideas for this project. An exiting project - Eno, Gabriel and others alongside the burgermeister of Berlin on one picture. . .then a FEW weeks actually before the FIFA-donkeys cancelled the whole thing ! because of "problems" with the ground and the meadows or whatever just before the beginning of very first match. CRAP. I think also Paul Van Dyke was involved into this project as a remixer. Peter`s comment was sth. like this: ". . .the FIFA obviously got cold feet" (and then cancelled the whole thing). what happened to the music ??? good question. . .

Thanks a lot Cimber for the explanations.

you know - these are moments which also hurt simple fans like us - like this cancelling of this opening ceremony . Therefore there were some good consolations after this: 1.) Peter`s "Imagine" performance in Torino/ winter Olympics - was it winter 2007/06 ? and the "Warm Up"-tour all over Europe with some 22/23 dates plus an excellent setlist. as a simple fan of PG you live through good and bad times hoping the best for the man and for us fans for the rest of 2011 .

You're right Cimber and it was a huge disappointment to know the opening ceremony was cancelled because it's not the first time a Peter Gabriel project don't see the light of day. The list is long! But what is frustrating is that we know he has new music that he never released, like the new "OVO" recording with his own vocals. But that's another story! The" Warm UP" tour was a nice surprise anyway.

FIFA World Cup 2006 was not disappointing. Italy won.

This isn't the piece Sammy but a reference to it on SolsburyHill forum. Looks like it was 5 years ago almost to the day! http://www.solsburyhill.org/peters-birthday-full-moon-update

Thanks a lot Duddy. It was a short but interesting piece of music, very different from the instrumental PG material.
