Hello PG fans. Just started looking over these forums a few minutes ago and thought that since I can never find anyone besides my sister who is as passionate about Peter's music as I am that I'd join and discuss. I'm still finding my way around so forgive me if this has been discussed.
I can't really say what my favorite album is since I really do love every one of them but I listen to Plays Live more than any other. Peter is the greatest showman on the face of the Earth and as amazing as he is in the studio almost nothing compares to him live.
This particular track list contains some of my favorite songs with the opening track San Jacinto being my absolute favorite but then like I said with Peter Gabriel it really is very difficult for me to even say that.
I listen to this one about every day now with my anticipation building for the new album which just can't get here soon enough.

Hi,Floydian Trip,and welcome!
Well,Plays live is the first Pg album I bought(along with US)so it's kind of special to me,as the first PG songs I heard on cd were live.I like many tracks from that:I Have the Touch,Shock the Monkey,I don't remember,No self control,Biko and Solsbury Hill, particularly because this album's editions are different than the records' ones.
The thing I like the most is the cover.Armando Gallo did his trick again.I believe it's one of the best PG pictures! :-]

Thanks Evoulini!

The cover is indeed great. Kinda reminiscent of his days with Genesis to me.
All great, classic PG songs on this album. I also love Humdrum.
This is a great way to get aquainted with his music for sure.

I agree!Because of the make-up I guess!

(Do you like Genesis as well?)
Well yeah, but first my mum had bought me PLAY because I liked the video of Big Time(I had seen it on TV)so I had listened to some studio versions before, but I paid attention to the videos then :-]
My favourite track from this record is definately I Have the Touch.

I agree that Plays Live is an excellent album. I purchased it after seeing him in concert for the first time on that tour. This release gave my Melt and Security vinyl a much needed rest. I am confused as to why your cite San Jacinto as the "opening track." The shows on that tour opened with The Rhythm Of The Heat. San Jacinto is the first track on disc 2 (or side 3 on vinyl) as it came in the middle of his performances that year.

You must have a much better album than I do then because I only have 1 disc. There are 8 tracks.
1. San Jacinto
2. Solsbury Hill
3. No Self Control
4. I Don't Remember
5. Shock The Monkey
6. Humdrum
7. On The Air
8. Biko
What's on yours?
And I love Gabriel Genesis and hate Phil Collins Genesis.

Floyd - you have the Disc 2 - "Peter Gabriel plays LIVE" has got 2 discs - there is also the shorter version of this album called "PGpL - Highlights" with one disc.
Here is a track-list of disc 1:
1. "Rhythm of the Heat"
2. "I Have the Touch"
3. "Not One of Us"
4. "Family Snapshot"
5. "D.I.Y"
&. "The Family and the Fishing Net"
7. "Intruder"
8. "I Go Swimming"
A few tracks missing on this one (you can`t have them all:-]) :
"Lay Your Hands on Me"
"Kiss of Life"
"Wallflower"
"John has a Headache" (a rare live-track played on a few gigs including Ottawa and Montreal).
"Peter Gabriel plays Live" presents all songs in a new fresh sound - so you have completely new versions of the album-versions from the 1st 4 albums - it`s like a "remix-album" with live-sound - absolutely perfect.

It's not that I think Phil Collins is bad because he definitely knows how to write a pop song and I suppose Abacab is a decent Genesis album but when I listen to Phil Collins Genesis I can't help but think how great it would be if they were still the influential progressive rock band that they once were. That's how I feel about Aerosmith as well.

I understand your point of view,I sometimes think how it would be if Peter hadn't left.
But I like they didn't keep on being prog rock all the time afterwards, because I think changes are good sometimes.Besides, they are humans and it's music so anything can happen

Think of it differently:if he was still with Genesis would we have all this great and different music (in my opinion)from both of them? :-]
Hey,Cimber,has the Plays Live(2 disks)benn remastered?All PG cds I have were 2003 remastered editions.

highlights is remastered,i have the japanese mini 2 disc plays live, wow, the sound is incredible, even for a non-remastered issue,no idea why they shortened the track list on the remaster and sacd, shame because "not one of us" would have sounded great in sacd format

Evoulini - I don`t have any of the 2003 PG-remasters - therefore I own all the 1994 PG-Genesis remasters and the "Genesis - the Box-Set 1970-75". At least I checked out the booklets of the PG-remasters and there are nice pictures in it - good design.
One track, that made it finally on the "plays LIVE"-album was "I GO SWIMMING" - a track already mentioned by Peter in an interview in 1980, shortly before the release of "PG III".
"I go Swimming" and Peter`s Gershwin-cover of "Summertime" are the best soundtrack for sunny summer-days

Yeah, the picyures of the remasters' booklets are good, indeed :-]
I must say I haven't listened to "I Go Swimming" yet, but I will because, fortunately, it's on the "Plays Live Highlights".

The first time i heard "Plays Live" i was surprised by the different versions of "I have the touch" and "No Self-control".
Then listen more times i am enterend in this "new colour" of these songs and i appreciated, and now i love them

"No self-control" in original version i love the sense of nightmare,in "Plays live" Peter makes it more. . . .fresh and graceful, and this is surprised me!
"I have the Touch", Peter makes a modern and new version of this song. . .I like too the version of "HITS".
. . . . and the original version of PGIV of course. . . fantastic!
Every time that i hear "San Jacinto" i imagine and dream Peter on stage with his fantastic gesture, his eyes, his theatricality. . .

The voice of Peter is always fan-tas-tic,but i add it is not just "the voice",but in these live versions we can admire the personality of Peter that he puts in everything he sings. . .

For me, Plays Live is a kinda frustrating experience.I love Peter's voice and emotional rendition but the rythm section sucks .sorry to say that, I think it's the worst Marrotta's drumming I ever heard. He's not a flashy drummer I know, and he did good on previous albums , and here.I don't know , maybe it's the production , all those trebles , or maybe his drumkit that sucked a bit.You know - that really annoying 80's sound of drums.too minimalistic , repetitive with lots of trebles.I'm allergic to that specific sound.
Another thing : the older tunes like Solsbury Hill, Humdrum, DIY, lost a lot of their initial charm, some guitar sections were simplified and replaced by synths.that sucks too in my humble opinion.
