To celebrate Hipgnosis’ 50th anniversary, Browse Gallery Berlin – in co-operation with Aubrey Powell – will present an exhibition, later this month, featuring many of the studio’s most recognisable album covers – including those created with and for Peter – published in large scale format as exquisite limited-edition prints.
“In the age of rock ‘n’ roll you could do great things, if only you had the balls to do it.“- Aubrey Powell
Hipgnosis was the, now legendary, British art house and photo design studio co-founded by Audrey Powell and concept artist and photographer Storm Thorgerson in London in 1968. Their radical, innovative ideas and complex, often surreal photographic images revolutionized album sleeve design forever.
They departed far from the tradition of the band-portrait album cover, dominant in the 1960s. Instead they shot and designed complex photographic images which followed their own creative vision – at times playing on the music or lyrics of the album, at other times simply expressing a unique artistic idea (often inspired by surrealist artists like Duchamp, Man Ray, Magritte or Dali) – always certain to raise maximum attention.
As well as working with Peter on three of his most recognisable album covers Peter Gabriel 1 (Car), Peter Gabriel 2 (Scratch) and Peter Gabriel 3 (Melt), the self-titled albums that are now often referred to by the iconic imagery of their covers, Hipgnosis also designed Atom Heart Mother, The Dark Side of the Moon,Wish You Were Here and Animals for Pink Floyd, Houses of the Holy for Led Zeppelin, How Dare You for 10cc and Love Drive for Scorpions – to name but a few of the 350+ covers they created between 1968-1983.
In addition to these much-loved album covers, the exhibition will also include a new series of black & white photo portraits of Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Paul McCartney and more. Many of these photographs have never been exhibited before.
