This update brings news of the Witness 'Focus for Change' benefit dinner and concert with the launch of 'The Hub', developments with 'The Elders', gearing-up and rehearsing for Decembers '46664' concert, some of the the best sound Peter's ever heard and music from 'Toumast' and 'The Imagined Village' - there's also another little snippet of 'Whole Thing' from the forthcoming 'Big Blue Ball' release.

On November 7, 2007 WITNESS will be launching its newest project: The Hub for human rights media and action. The Hub will be a grassroots-driven, participatory media website that will enable anyone anywhere in the world with access to the internet to upload, share, discuss and take action around human rights-related media and resources. Through the Hub, organizations, networks and groups around the world will be able to bring their human rights stories and campaigns to global attention.

Peter is confirmed to play the 46664 concert in Johannesburg in December.

Other artists announced are Annie Lennox, Ludacris, Corinne Bailey Rae, the Goo Goo Dolls, Razorlight and Jamelia.

Solid State Logic announced it is now selling fully equipped 'replicas' of Peter Gabriel's private recording shed. Mix magazine editor Sarah Jones talks to Gabriel about this ambitious project.

MIDEM, the world’s music market, will honour Peter Gabriel with the MIDEM Personality of the Year Award.

Peter will receive the award at a gala dinner for industry executives at MIDEM in Cannes on Monday 28 January.

Peter Gabriel will be honored as a BMI Icon at the U.S. performing right organizations annual London Awards, set for Oct. 16 in the Londons Dorchester Hotel, Park Lane. The black-tie, invitation-only gala will recognize the U.K. and European songwriters and publishers of the past years most-played BMI songs on American radio and television. BMI is a United States-based performing right organization that collects and distributes monies for public performance of music in the U.S., including on radio, TV and Internet.

The Icon designation is given to BMI songwriters who have had a unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers. Gabriel joins an elite list of past honorees that includes multi-genre nobility like Ray Davies, Van Morrison, the Bee Gees, Isaac Hayes, Dolly Parton, James Brown, Paul Simon, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Steve Winwood and more.

To mark the 10th anniversary of Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's death, journalist and film-maker Navid Akhtar examines the legacy of this musical megastar whose haunting voice enraptured millions across the globe and who successfully collaborated with countless top Western musicians.

It was American singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley who, in 1993, described Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan as "his Elvis". In this programme, Akhtar looks at how this musician of an art form distinctive to Northern India and Pakistan became a global superstar in his own right and the most famous artist to emerge from the sub-continent since Ravi Shankar.

Akhtar examines the impact Nusrat had on Asian culture in the UK and on the global music scene of the Eighties and Nineties. He tracks Nusrat's path from a long line of Qawwali musicians who sang devotional love songs at the shrines of the Sufi priests, to the voice on soundtracks of films directed by the likes of Martin Scorsese, Oliver Stone and Tim Robbins.

And, through Akhtar's personal story, listeners learn how Nusrat's music enabled a young Pakistani teenager to connect to his own cultural background.

Contributors include Nitin Sawhney, Massive Attack's Robert Del Naja, Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan and Peter Gabriel.

August 16th 2007 is the 10th anniversary of the loss of one of the world's most outstanding vocalists - the great Sufi qawwal Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Touched by genius, Nusrat was undoubtedly, spiritualy and technically, one of the greatest voices of his day as well as a visionary innovator who explored a new and daring contemporary musical language.

Some of Nusrat's greatest collaborative work with Wesstern music began with Peter Gabriel's soundtrack for Martin Scorcese's film 'The Last Temptation of Christ' - the ground breaking score 'Passion'. The long-standing relationship with Canadian producer/musician Michael Brook on the albums ‘Mustt Mustt’ and ‘Night Song’ introduced Nusrat’s music to another new audience. By the time he was to be heard as the key voice for the films ‘Natural Born Killers’ and ‘Dead Man Walking’ (with Eddie Vedder) he had reached the status of international superstar.

As Peter Gabriel said at the time Nusrat's passing: "I have never heard so much spirit in a voice. Nusrat was a supreme example of how far and deep a voice can go in finding, touching and moving the soul'.

Peter's in South Africa today for the lauch of a long cherished ide "The Elders".

Several years ago entrepreneur Richard Branson and Peter discussed with Nelson Mandela the obstacles to solving difficult conflicts facing the world. Their idea of a small, dedicated group of leaders, working objectively and without any vested personal interest in the outcome, began to develop and eventually grew into The Elders.

Nelson Mandela announced the formation of this new group, The Elders, today in a speech he delivered on the occasion of his 89th birthday. He was joined by founding members of the group, Desmond Tutu, Graça Machel, Kofi Annan, Jimmy Carter, Li Zhaoxing, Mary Robinson and Muhammad Yunus. Founding members, Ela Bhatt and Gro Harlem Brundtland were unable to attend.

Peter said, “In traditional societies, the elders always had a role in conflict resolution, long-term thinking and applying wisdom wherever it was needed. We are moving to this global village and yet we don’t have our global elders. The Elders can be a group who have the trust of the world, who can speak freely, be fiercely independent, and respond fast and flexibly in conflict situations.”

The Elders will be independently funded by a group of Founders.

As our world rapidly evolves to one global village, there is a need for a group of well respected leaders who will use their wisdom, leadership and moral courage to help make our planet a more peaceful, healthy and equitable place to live.  Peter Gabriel is donating all the revenues from this charity auction to support the development of this idea
