Big Blue Ball on NPR

You can hear Peter Gabriel, Karl Wallinger and Stephen Hague talking about Big Blue Ball on NPR's 'Weekend Edition Sunday' from the Sunday June 22 show.

"It was just like a musical health farm, really," Wallinger says. "There wasn't any considerations other than the sounds you heard in the room, which were always pretty extraordinary and played by people who had been mastering their instrument in whatever way for however many years. I think the collective musical years that had gone down amongst everybody there would have been well into the thousands."

Thomas Brooman CBE

We'd like to offer our warmest congratulation to Thomas Brooman - co-founder and for 28 years, from 1980 to 2008, Artistic Director of WOMAD, who was awarded the CBE (Commander of The British Empire) in The Queen's Birthday Honors List, "for services to Music and to Charity".

"Pure enthusiasm for music from around the world led us to the idea of WOMAD in 1980 and thus to the first WOMAD festival in 1982. The festivals have always been wonderful and unique occasions and have succeeded in introducing an international audience to many talented artists…. Equally important, the festivals have also allowed many different audiences to gain an insight into cultures other than their own through the enjoyment of music. Music is a universal language, it draws people together and proves, as well as anything, the stupidity of racism."… Peter Gabriel

Big Blue Ball - video and remix pack

As our sites begin to re-emerge on the web it's a joy to be able to add some new content, with some initial information on Big Blue Ball - including an interview with Peter Gabriel and Karl Wallinger and a remix pack from the album at Real World Remixed.

Our pack is from the track 'Exit Through You' from the long awaited 'Big Blue Ball', an album recorded over three Real World Recording Weeks, produced by Peter Gabriel and Karl Wallinger and featuring a dizzying array of international musicians. 'Exit Through You' opens with the distinctive vocal of Joseph Arthur with Peter Gabriel joining at the chorus for a funky spiky pop tune accompanied by Karl Wallinger and Justin Adams on guitars. The song was originally put together in a fast and furious live session in just over one hour back in 1995; further production work by Stephen Hague followed and a final mix came from Tchad Blake.

Server Update

Systems are gradually coming back to life following the theft of our servers last weekend - we now have womadshop.com, petergabriel.com, realworldremixed.com and realworld.co.uk at least partially back to life. Real World Records and WOMAD area little more troublesome to restore, but we're working on it.

We've taken the 'opportunity' to move our servers to a new facility and so now have "On-site armed security is around-the-clock. They monitor the alarm system and security cameras that are on all perimeter points of ingress/egress to the building. Bulletproof security station and shipping/receiving areas with a Biometric security system are also in place. Our personnel require authorized escorted visitations." And if the power goes off our new providers have 50,000 gallons of fuel for the generators on site, so we hope to be available and pretty resilient to outside forces from here on.

We'll be back soon - apologies for the lack of service

The majority of Real World, Peter Gabriel and WOMAD web services are currently off-line. Our servers were stolen from our ISP's data centre on Sunday night - Monday morning. We are working to restore normal service as soon as possible.
Our first move has been to get our store up and running, so if you want WOMAD Charlton Park tickets or Music from Real World Records, we are back in business.

The Filter - Entertainment Recommendation System Enters Private Beta

"We believe one of the many joys of the internet would be freedom of choice, but many of us are now drowning in an ocean of options. An intelligent filter can remove the burden and boredom of choice and get us what we want and need with plenty of exploration and discovery. The Filter is a smart on-line companion - once it knows you, your tastes and your moods, it can discover treasure for you every time" say Peter Gabriel.

The Filter uses an advanced algorithm derived from the world of artificial intelligence and Bayesian mathematics to filter out irrelevant content and filter in content that reflects an individual's tastes and moods across entertainment media, including music, film, web video, entertainment news and, in time, TV.

Also included in The Filter is a strong element of social networking that allows a user to share and recommend newly discovered content with friends, and the potential to shape your own digital discovery experience by using other people's tastes.
